Belgian immersive audio company wins international design award Red Dot

Professional audio company Areal has received a Red Dot Design Award in the Product Design category for its SR1 immersive headphone system.

Based in Boom, near Antwerp, Areal launched its first products earlier this year and has already attracted attention from Grammy Award-winning producers and artists including Hardwell and Laidback Luke.

The Red Dot Design Award is an international design competition organised by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany. Entries are evaluated by a jury of around 40 experts on criteria including innovation, functionality and durability. Winners are entitled to use the Red Dot quality label.

"Receiving a Red Dot Design Award is an important recognition of the work our team has put into developing the SR1," said Areal co-founder Pieter Doms. "The SR1 headphones were designed for producers and artists working in immersive music, film and game audio, as well as for students preparing for careers in the industry. Today, these professionals often depend on specialised studios to work in the right listening environment. With the SR1 connected to a laptop, they can continue working on immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos while travelling or away from the studio, using a consistent reference for their mixes."

Unlike traditional stereo headphones, which contain a single driver per ear, the SR1 features four drivers in each earcup. Combined with Areal's proprietary AIM™ (Acoustic Image Mapping) technology, this setup enables sounds to be positioned above, behind and around the listener. The result is a three-dimensional listening experience that helps producers assess how audiences will hear the final mix in cinemas or through surround sound systems.

Founded in 2021, Areal operates from Lab of Tomorrow, a facility that brings together technology companies, creative talent and industry partners to develop new entertainment technologies. The company is currently expanding its international sales network, with distribution agreements for the Benelux and the United Kingdom recently secured.

AREAL headquarters are located at Lab of Tomorrow in Boom.
